BONE FORTRESS
continued...

THE BACK

On the back side of the piece, you can  see how several towers and platforms are being supported by bone columns.   I actually split the Battlemasters tower in half to get more mileage out of it- the top half is the uppermost tower, the bottom half is the section to the left with the studded wooden door.  This piece of scenery has a massive number of hiding spots, cubby holes, and deep caves in it...  The column in the center is an Armorcast Bone Obelisk, turned upside down.  I strapped a plastic skeleton on for good measure.  My favorite piece of detail is the backbone / rib column at bottom center- it's the back bones from a chicken.

The piece painted surprisingly fast.   I primed in black and used varying shades of gray, green, brown and tan to detail the stone work.  Spikes, chains, etc. were drybrushed steel and brass.   For the bones, I first drybrushed with a light brown, then with white.  Even though they are primed in black, the bones really pop out when painted this way, especially against the dark stone.  I also used liberal amounts of dark brown and rust colored wash to give the stone and metal more character.

...AND LIGHTS TOO!
Keeping up with the rest of my chaos scenery, I spent a night gutting the inside of this massive structure so I could run wiring and flicker bulbs inside!  The biggest job was ripping the floor out of the central tower and replacing it with some plastic mesh, so the interior would light up nicely.  There were already several windows built into the outer towers- I just needed to cut away enough room in the interior to get bulbs up behind them.   I also cut holes in front and added two round windows (made from plastic wagon wheels).    The whole piece takes 5 bulbs to light up nicely- that's an entire string crammed in there.   I even cut some notches in the base to allow wire to pass easily (rather than the piece teetering on the wire).

I found every possible place I could to let light out.  Some of the lower areas had deep recesses in them that you could never see into because they were so dark.  So I used a Dremel cutoff wheel to cut these slots from the inside of the fortress, so light could get out.  The result is quite creepy...
