ARCADIA 3D BOARDS

Although 2.5D boards are great for play and ease of storage, we still enjoy the occasional full 3D scenery setup, especially for outdoor settings.

For our campaign log photos, we've been adding flat backdrops to help set the scene, almost like a miniature movie set.

These backdrops were edited in Photoshop, printed out, and mounted onto black foam core.  A small block of wood glued to the back helps them stand up.

These backdrops are made from sections of the old GW Mighty Fortress kit.  The textured detail works better than flats when doing dramatic lighting effects.  To help them stand up, a metal corner bracket is taped to the back.

Even a 2.5D board can benefit from having some 3D props This impressive selection of furnishings and doors are from the new re-release of Heroquest (mostly Mage of the Mirror expansion).  Just a bit of paint and these chunky pieces are ready to go!

Our first true 3D outdoor layout was for the town of Burnish, and made use of several older pieces of terrain from Mordheim, Seacrashers, etc, plus creative use of foam hills, background walls and wood floor panels.

The buildings are a mix of porcelain Christmas Village buildings, and GW terrain like the fortified manor.

The table surface itself was also painted with grays, browns and greens using sponges and foam shelf liner to get the cobblestone road look.

The next 3D terrain setup makes use of our existing mines and hills scenery.

The mine tracks are made from HO scale train track.

The table surface is a painted cloth.  The hills are made from layers of shredded sound dampening board.
